Chiesa di San Sebastiano (Church of St Sebastian)

Church of St Sebastian

Built between the 16th and the 17th century, the church of St Sebastian is thought to have been originally located in the outskirts of the village. Now, instead, as a result of the long conurbation of Villanovafranca, it is right in the buzzing heart of the village.

The evenly whitewashed façade of the church is embellished by a grand door of dark stone, with a swan-neck pediment on top, cut in in the midst by a small reproduction of a Renaissance-style tempietto.

Past the door, you will see the interiors, which are laid out in one single nave, covered by a network of barrel vaults. Two quadrangular-plan chapels with ancient wooden altars look out onto the central nave, which leads up to the high altar, also made of carved wood, with a valuable sculpture of the patron saint, St Sebastian, made by a local artist in the 18th century, standing out on it.

The local devotion to the Saint is very ancient and deeply felt in town, as confirmed by another holy image of St Sebastian in the Greater chapel of the Church of St Lawrence, the “cresia manna” or greater church of Villanovafranca.
