Chiesa Romanica di San Pietro (Church of St Peter)

Church of St Peter

The Church of St Peter is composed of a Romanesque façade, with quite distinctive gabled battlements – inspired by the Spanish style – with a central door standing on capitals and a bell gable.

The off-balance front of the church adds an odd touch to the whole thing. The church is assumed to have been built in 1200 with one single nave, and the second nave may have been added later.

Both naves now have two apses, a rare feature in the Sardinian region. A widely shared hypothesis is that the craftsmen that went to work on it later on tried to imitate the style of their predecessors, somehow duplicating the layout of the space.

Past the two entrance doors, you can have a look at the layout of the space; the wooden roof interacting with the stone floor and some truly remarkable sculptures. One of these is a wooden statue of St Peter in Pontifical vestments, carved between the 17th and the 18th century.
