Nuraghe - Su Mulinu

The exploration of the Su Mulinu nuraghe, the Nuragic site that looks over the valley of the Rio Mannu, is one of the most exciting activities you can go on when you are in Villanovafranca.
The Prehistoric fortress features an intricate plan, due to many layers that have been built over it in the course of centuries. The first built-up cluster, which you can see only after entering the site, still has its main rooms followed by smaller areas, all connected by an intricate network of corridors.
The surrounding village was born when the nuraghe was at this very early and extremely ancient stage of development.
Over time, the construction of the stronghold became stronger and more complex through the addition of a rampart with towers, a defensive structure provided with barriers to protect the parade ground.
It has been suggested that the nuraghe must also have acted as a temple, as indicated by two ritual hearths and a big sandstone altar erected in the central room of the building.
To complete your tour, we recommend you go to the Civico Museo Archeologico “su Mulinu”, where you can look at the many finds dug out during the excavations, creating some interesting connections between what you saw outside and the many gems of material culture that are on display inside the museum.
