Villanovaforru - Archaeological Park of Genna Maria

For its probable territorial control function, the Genna Maria nuraghe stands on top of a hill, a few kilometres from the centre of Villanovaforru. So, you will enjoy an exclusive scenic view reaching as far as the Gulf of Cagliari and the Gulf of Oristano.

The nuraghe has a complex layout, originally consisting of a central tower with an inner space and a thick wall, ribbed with three big towers. Its subsequent development involved the addition of more constructions that have gradually thickened up the Prehistoric site.
In the Iron Age, the Genna Maria nuraghe was used for religious purposes and became a venue for votive rituals in honour of Demeter and Kore.

The archaeological excavations unearthed a hefty cluster of finds that led to some interesting discoveries about material culture, with items that are now on display in the Museo Archeologico Genna Maria.
