Museo del Pane e della Panificazione del Civraxu

A few metres from the Town Hall, Casa Villasanta, once home to an oil mill, is now the premises of the Museo del Pane e della Panificazione del Civraxu, unveiled in 2017 to preserve and hand down the ancient baking traditions to make the typical bread of Sanluri.
There’s actually a long history behind the «Civraxu», the typical durum wheat bread of Sanluri, which is popular in most southern regions of Sardinia. It seems to have been created as early as 235 BC, the year in which many Roman legions landed in the island to conquer it and got the better over the Sardinians and Carthaginians that ruled over it.
The five chronological sections the story runs through have been designed to make the visitors “experience” the flavours and tastes of Civraxu.
The Museum tells the story of Civraxu bread since ancient times, from the tilling of the land through all the different stages of the baking process, without ever losing sight of the traditions of the past.
The three steps, i.e. kneading, leavening and baking, are addressed with an almost scientific method, with the final product, the bread, as the exhibit.
