Giants’ Grave Sa Domu ‘e S’Orcu

The Giants’ Grave Sa Domu ‘e S’Orcu rises on the basalt plateau of Su Pranu in Siddi.
The name “Giants’ Grave” is inspired by the large size of this particular kind of tombs, specially designed to accommodate multiple burials. Because of the astonishing state of preservation of the site, the different parts of the Grave can be observed with a high resolution: a little trapezoidal door leads you into a wide burial chamber.
The grave is approximately 15 metres long, with an 18m wide circular exedra.
The stratigraphic excavations have unearthed a few traces of a floor made of small pebbles which the body and the grave goods were laid upon.
The exceptional height of the burial chamber, exceeding two and a half metres in some places, makes it one of the highest Giants’ Graves in the island. Even the façade exhibits a quite unique style of construction, standing out above the other nuraghes for its bottommost stones being smaller than those at the top.
As you step in, you will notice a distinctive niche resting about one metre from the ground, made of monolithic slabs, that must have probably been used to lay special votive offerings on or to celebrate funeral rites. Of the island’s about 2,000 Giants’ Graves in, only 8 more graves have a niche like that.
