Giara of Tuili

Giara of Tuili

The Giara plateau stands in the centre of Sardinia, so large it borders on as many as four of the region’s municipalities: Gesturi, Genoni, Setzu and Tuili.

The Giara is a volcanic plateau, as is proven by the basalt stones that crop out all over the place. It is fairly large and stands 600 metres above sea level. The entire area stands out for a virtually uncontaminated nature, with a rich flora of cork oaks, downy oaks, rock roses, mastic trees, asphodels.

But the greatest attractions are the “Cavallini della Giara”, a beautiful breed of horses with distinctive almond-shaped eyes, a thick mane and a small stature that still live in the area. In addition, you can visit the Botanical Gardens and the Maiore and Piccia marshes, which in summer fill up with water and are covered with a haze of little white flowers.
