Villanovaforru

Villanovaforru, 09020 (Medio Campidano)

Villanovaforru is a lovely village with a population of approximately 600, standing on the rolling hills of the Marmilla region. It has become famous after the discovery of the Genna Maria nuraghe which led to the opening of an archaeological museum. The Nuragic complex towers over the area with its imposing presence and provides an exclusive glance over the past of this ancient village. The museum displays priceless finds that cover seven centuries of history and come from different sites scattered all over the region.

An enchanting village with one of the most notable gems of ancient Nuragic civilisation

Villanovaforru - Museo Archeologico Genna Maria

In addition to the Genna Maria nuraghe, the museum is also home to finds from pre-Nuragic, Nuragic, Punic, Roman and late Antique eras unearthed in different places of the Marmilla region. Visitors can explore the daily life of the Nuragic populations and the evolution of their sacred rituals, including the cults of Demeter and Kore and the Byzantine ones.

The archaeological site of Pinn'e e Maiolu provides even more evidence of the ancient Prehistoric populations.

The centre of Villanovaforru, built back in the 17th century under Spanish rule, still preserves a traditional architecture that never fails to enchant whoever visits the village.

The village community has a deep devotion for St Marina of Aguas Santas, whom they celebrate twice a year with a wonderful church and traditional processions. Other feasts include those of St Sebastian, St Isidore and St Francis.
